What other motherboard would you use for an osx86 install, other than the Gigabyte Motherboard (GA-G31M-ES2L)?

I want one that will fit in a larger ATX case and not a Micro ATX case - I'm looking to build a more powerful editing station based on a Quad-Core processor for use with Final Cut Pro. Does anybody have experience with this?

The GA-G31M-ES2L will fit into an ATX case, and will support a quad core processor. The only two limitation I see with using it are the 4 GIG Memory Limit and the 2 PCI slots.

If I were going to buy an actual ATX motherboard I would get the Gigabyte GA-EP45-EX.

It has dual GB NICs that are both supported by OSX out of the box, and will support up to 16 GB RAM. It is not as cheap as the G31M, but it is a much better motherboard. It is awesome actually.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Cheers!

Do you know if the Firewire will work under os x on this board?

I am not sure. It all depends on the chipset that was used for the firewire controller on the MB. I DO know that there are some really cheap FW Cards that work really well though (ones that I have used). So, if the onboard firewire doesn’t work I can suggest a few cards that do. Of, if you want to check into the MB and find what firewire chipset is used I can tell you if it should work or not.

I found it. The Firewire Chipset is Texas Instruments TSB43AB23. That shipset is used in other PCI Firewire cards that ARE Mac compatible, so without testing I would feel confident that they would work without issue. This product from NewEgg using the same chipset and is claims it is compatible woth Mac over OS 8.6: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item...56&Tpk=TSB43AB23

So that Chipset is on the ATX mother board you mentioned? The Gigabyte GA-EP45-EX? So the onboard firewire should work?

It SHOULD work, but since I don’t have that motherboard I cannot test it. But like I said, since it has the same chipset as a card that IS Mac Compatible it should work – but I can’t promise. Let me know if it does though.

Thanks! I really appreciate your help. I was also wondering if you know of a really powerful laptop that will work with the boot-123 option out of the box with working wifi, bluetooth, usb, firewire, etc. I have been checking online, but its always good to get a first hand experience from someone if you have had a chance to install os x on a laptop.
